New Rochelle Public Library events

Library presents programs featuring live animals and related exhibit

“Life on Earth: A Photographic Tour of Global Biodiversity” is the summer exhibit at the New Rochelle Public Library on view in the Lumen Winter Gallery during regular library hours through Aug. 8, 2014. Director of Animal Embassy Chris Evers and Curator of the Wolf Conservation Center Rebecca Bose, have traveled the world experiencing remote places and the animals and people inhabiting them. Their stunning photographs from India, Africa, South and Central America and the United States examine the cultural and biological diversity of our world and include a number of critically endangered species in widely remote and surprisingly local habitats.

Downtown farmers market

The New Rochelle’s Downtown Farmers Market will be held every Saturday through Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Library Green next to the New Rochelle Public Library on Huguenot Street between Memorial Highway and Lawton Street.

This festive neighborhood market features more than 30 weekly and guest vendors selling local farm-fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods and other specialty foods. The market will also showcase artisanal products and community organizations. Shoppers can join friends and dine on the Green with prepared foods from an assortment of dine downtown restaurants.

To make this a great community happening for the entire family, there will be free children’s activities and live music every Saturday.

The Farmer’s Market is sponsored by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District, Monroe College, Green Mountain Energy and Halstead New Rochelle.

Call for artists and writers

The Blue Door Art Gallery in Yonkers is currently seeking submissions for its inaugural issue of the Blue Door Quarterly Journal a new literary and art publication.

The Journal, which will be available in print and online, will feature work from new and established artists working across various mediums including Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Photography and  Fine art.

Each issue of the publication will have a different theme. For our inaugural issue, the theme is community.

Show us your community and what it means to you. How do you define community?

Submission deadline: Aug. 10, 2014

Submission guidelines:

-Three submissions per artist.

-Word count limit for fiction/nonfiction work: 2,000

-Previously published work not acceptable.

-All submissions must be original work of artist.

-We accept the following formats: PDF, DOC, DOCX, PNG, JPG.

Include the appropriate category of your submission in the subject line.

Additionally, please include your name, phone number and other methods of contact, should we publish your work. All decisions will be made by Sept. 1. If your work submitted to the Journal becomes published elsewhere, please notify us immediately.

Events at the Lutheran Church

Prayer services

Held regularly on the last Saturday of the month. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., following the regular Saturday service, these brief moments for meditation and prayer offer personal prayers at the altar and the ancient tradition of anointing with oil.

Good News coffee house

The next Good News Christian Coffee House will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, featuring Frank Rendo. The Coffee House opens at 7 p.m. with coffee and pastries, and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students, $3 for children ages 5 to 12.
