Larchmont Library activities for children and young adults

Library lab with the Westchester Children’s Museum: DNA detectives

Ages 8 to 11 on Thursday, July 31, at 4 p.m. Registration required. Lab coats, goggles and lab equipment is provided as kids are guided through the scientific method of extracting DNA strands from strawberry cells.

Cartooning with Mike Teator

Tuesdays, Aug. 5 and 19 at 4 p.m. Cartooning with Miked Teator. Ages 8 to 11. Registration required.

Do you like cartoons and animated figures like Garfield and Super Mario Brothers? Come find out how to draw your favorite characters from local artist and after-school instructor Mike Teator. Library lab with Westchester Children’s Museum: Sharks

Venture through a fantastic lesson in comparative anatomy during the dissection of a preserved dogfish shark, make a shark-o-meter to measure dozens of different species and taste a piece of freshly cooked Mako shark steak.

Just Dance 2014 tournament

Test your gaming skills and compete against other gamers for the Just Dance 2014 Xbox 360 tournament title. The game will be projected on a large screen.

Guilty Conscience Book Club.

Sandbox Theatre fall registration

Westchester Sandbox Theatre is calling all young actors and actresses. Registration for our fall semester of acting classes is now open. Gain confidence, learn new skills and become a stronger performer in this class that uses improvisation, monologues and scene work to create theatrical magic.

Five-hour pre-licensing class

Formula One Driving School, located at 584 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck, has its five-hour pre-licensing class scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 4 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m.; Sunday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m.; Saturday Aug. 16, at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m.

This class is required by New York State for new drivers before they can take their road test.

Garden tour

The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy is overseeing tours of the gardens, located at 945 North Broadway in Yonkers. See the website at untermyergardens.org. It’s a beautiful Persian garden with many other features including Greek, Roman, Italian and much more, and there is an interesting background story. The garden is undergoing an extensive long-term restoration in partnership with the City of Yonkers. The conservancy gives 90-minute docent-led public tours every Sunday, $10 per person, free for children under 12, no pre-registration is required.

Saxon Woods Park events

Pirate school

Do you want to learn how to become a pirate? On Saturday, Aug. 2, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Saxon Woods Park in White Plains will have activities for children and their families to come and learn how to stand, talk, laugh and sing like a pirate by the pool.

Superhero Day

Superhero Day is here. There will be a hunt to find a hidden treasure in which you can let your inner superhero shine during “Superhero Day.” It is being held at Saxon Woods Pool, Wednesday, Aug. 6, and starts at noon with a parade around the pool deck.

A prize will be awarded to the best superhero costume.

Fundraiser for Honor Flight

Hudson Valley Honor Flight is a non-profit organization that offers American World War II veterans a free trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials. The organization is partnering with Westchester County Veterans Service Agency to make the trip out of Westchester County Airport possible on Oct. 18.

Volunteers are needed to help:


-Contact local businesses and organizations to seek sponsorship opportunities

-Locate interested veterans

-Coordinate travel information

-Escort veterans to and from Westchester County Airport

-Serve as a voice to the veteran community

Funds will send WWII veterans to Washington D.C. Individuals interested in volunteering should visit HVHonorFlight.com or call
