Required reads roundtable

Aug. 12.

Readers Theater

For children age 6, 9:30 a.m. For children ages 7 and 8, 11 a.m.

The book is “The Conference of the Birds,” retold by Alexis York Lumbard and illustrated by Demi.

Come hear the magical adventure of a diverse flock of birds who go in search of their king, who they miss very much.  Led by the wise and beautiful hoopoe bird, together they overcome fear and other obstacles on their journey to find their much beloved king. Participants will pick their favorite parts of the story, write dialogue for the characters and then act out their dialogue for one another.

Limited to six participants. Registration required.

Summer at the Sandbox

The Westchester Sandbox Theatre is an exciting place for your young performer to be this summer. A fantastic performing arts day camp, Summer at the Sandbox is open to campers ages 7 to 13 looking to act, sing, dance and be creative this summer.

Camp director Benjamin Sterling Cannon, former Broadway performer and current performing arts educator, will lead campers on a journey of self-discovery and artistic expression as he and his staff help campers write and create their very own show.

Campers will all get a chance to shine. And because it is the summer, there will be field trips to the beach, the Bronx Zoo and even Playland.

Camp sessions run from July 7 to July 25 and July 28 to Aug. 8, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Three week session is $900 and two week session is $600.

Summer filmmaking workshop for teens

Geared for young people 12 and up, LMC-TV’s summer filmmaking workshops are an opportunity to learn hands-on video and filmmaking skills. From script writing, to cinematography, to computer video editing and more, participants will write, shoot, direct, act and edit their own movie.

Each workshop is held Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for three weeks at LMC-TV’s Studio 2, located at 145 Library Lane, Mamaroneck.

Workshop I runs from June 30 to July 18 and Workshop II from July 21 to August 8.  Led by independent filmmaker and LMC-TV staff member Dena Schumacher, the workshop is in its 14th year.

Five-hour prelicensing class

Formula One Driving School, located at 584 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck, has the five-hour prelicensing class scheduled for Saturday, May 24, at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, May 28, at 4 p.m.; Saturday, May 31, at 10 a.m.; Sunday, June 8, at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, June 11, at 4 p.m.; Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, June 18, at 4 p.m.; Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, June 25, at 4 p.m.; Saturday, June 28, at 10 a.m.

This class is required by New York State for new drivers before they can take their road test.

Sprint to Flint

Registration in now open for the 2014 Larchmont run, “Sprint to Flint,” a competitive 5K race and a 1-mile fun run. The race begins and ends in Flint Park and the course goes through Larchmont Manor.

The event will be held on Friday, June 13, at 6 p.m. Register early and online to save money at villageoflarchmont.org.

There is no rain date scheduled for this event.

Corporations tee-up support for people with developmental disabilities

On Tuesday, June 24, Cerebral Palsy of Westchester will host their 13th annual golf classic at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale.

Corporate sponsors and individual players will enjoy a day of golf and have a shot at the hole-in-one and other competitions. After the tournament, participants will take part in the evening’s festivities, which include dinner, silent auction, raffle and a presentation of the tournament winners.

Cerebral Palsy of Westchester would like to thank the sponsors and supporters that contribute to CPW’s efforts in raising money for programs and services that thousands of children and adults with disabilities benefit from each year.
