“When Jews Were Funny” explores the role of Jewish comedians in the history of North American comedy and humor.

Aug. 13 at 6:45 p.m.

“Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy” examines the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical.

Aug. 20 at 6:45 p.m.

“When Do We Eat” is the story of a dysfunctional Jewish family at its first Passover Seder held after three years. An old-fashioned Jewish father struggles to bring the entire family together after being slipped a dose of what his son believes to be a combination of ecstasy and LSD. As the night continues, each family member reveals secrets that cause tension, but in the end it just brings them closer together.

College essay workshop

A fun, informative, but relaxed college essay workshop will help students kick start the application process at the Rye Free Reading Room on Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Marek Fuchs, a Sarah Lawrence Writing Department faculty member and author who has three procrastinating kids of his own, imparts the lowdown on the sort of topics that work, the ones that scream trouble and gives many other valuable tips. Kindle workshop

Learn how to download library e-books to your Kindle. The Rye Free Reading Room will present a Kindle Workshop on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. See how to use the overdrive catalog to find popular titles, download them to a Kindle and access them on your mobile device. Library staff will lead the workshop to provide reader’s advisory and technical assistance. Some experience with computers is required. Family Fun Night

The last Family Fun Night for children age 5 and up and their grown-ups at the Rye Free Reading Room will be “Ooey Gooey Chemistry” with Johnda Ferrari on Thursday, August 14, at 6 p.m. Kids can roll up their sleeves and measure, pour, mix, and compare various solids and liquids, and watch as these substances foam, gel, glob, ooze, bubble up or disappear. Space is limited and pre-registration is required; sign up at the library or call 231-3162.
