Summer daze

It’s a creative writing workshop for seniors on Saturdays starting July 19 to Aug. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the board room. No previous workshop experience is necessary. All genres welcome.

Bronxville Women’s Club events

Art sessions

The Bronxville Women’s Club offers free art sessions to its members on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Members bring their own supplies and enjoy an afternoon of drawing, sketching or painting with the company of fellow members and their immediate families. Events at the Lutheran Church

Prayer services

Held regularly on the last Saturday of the month. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., following the regular Saturday service, these brief moments for meditation and prayer offer personal prayers at the altar and the ancient tradition of anointing with oil.

Good News coffee house

The next Good News Christian Coffee House will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, featuring Frank Rendo. The Coffee House opens at 7 p.m. with coffee and pastries, and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students, $3 for children ages five to 12. Pilgrimage

Pastor Rob and Sue Hartwell are exploring sponsoring a Holy Land Pilgrimage‑Walk in the Footsteps of Jesus‑for 10 days: Feb. 2 to 11, 2015.

The tour itinerary is for Haifa, Tiberias, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jerusalem and would be $3,379 per person from New York, which includes the $700 govt. taxes/airline fuel surcharges. Tour includes: first class hotels, breakfast and dinner daily, services of a professional tour director, comprehensive sightseeing, all hotel service charges and local taxes, porterage and entrance fees.

Garden tour

The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy is overseeing tours of the gardens, located at

945 North Broadway in Yonkers. See the website at untermyergardens.org. It’s a beautiful Persian garden with many other features including Greek, Roman, Italian and much more, and there is an interesting background story. The garden is undergoing an extensive long-term restoration in partnership with the City of Yonkers. The conservancy gives 90-minute docent-led public tours every Sunday, $10 per person, free for children under 12, no pre-registration is required.

Call for artists and writers

The Blue Door Art Gallery in Yonkers is currently seeking submissions for its inaugural issue of the Blue Door Quarterly Journal a new literary and art publication.

The Journal, which will be available in print and online, will feature work from new and established artists working across various mediums:

-Fiction

-Nonfiction

-Poetry

-Photography

-Fine art

Each issue of the publication will have a different theme. For our inaugural issue, the theme is community.

Show us your community and what it means to you. How do you define community?

Submission deadline: Aug. 10, 2014

Submission guidelines:

-Three submissions per artist.

-Word count limit for fiction/nonfiction work: 2,000

-Previously published work not acceptable.

-All submissions must be original work of artist.

Saxon Woods Park events

Pirate school

Do you want to learn how to become a pirate? On Saturday, Aug. 2, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Saxon Woods Park in White Plains will have activities for children and their families to come and learn how to stand, talk, laugh and sing like a pirate by the pool.

Superhero Day

Superhero Day is here. There will be a hunt to find a hidden treasure in which you can let your inner superhero shine during “Superhero Day.” It is being held at Saxon Woods Pool, Wednesday, Aug. 6, and starts at noon with a parade around the pool deck.

A prize will be awarded to the best superhero costume.

New Rochelle farmers market

The New Rochelle’s Downtown Farmers Market will be held every Saturday through Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Library Green next to the New Rochelle Public Library on Huguenot Street between Memorial Highway and Lawton Street.

This festive neighborhood market features more than 30 weekly and guest vendors selling local farm-fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods and other specialty foods. The market will also showcase artisanal products and community organizations. Shoppers can join friends and Dine on the Green with prepared foods from an assortment of Dine Downtown restaurants.

To make this a great community happening for the entire family, there will be free children’s activities and live music every Saturday.

The Farmer’s Market is sponsored by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District, Monroe College, Green Mountain Energy and Halstead New Rochelle.
