Larchmont Lions take steps to
boost small businesses
The Larchmont Lions Club has taken the initiative to solicit discounts from a large number of Larchmont merchants and turned them into coupons in a colorful, convenient booklet. The pocket-size shopping aid was launched at the club’s holiday party on Dec. 6 at Palmer’s Crossing Restaurant. The discounts from 40 restaurants, boutiques, shops and service providers are good until Dec. 31, 2014. The booklets, endorsed by the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce, will be sold to the public for $10 each, which can be recouped readily.
The Lions’ proceeds go to various charities, both local and worldwide, in the areas of blindness prevention, youth, environment, disaster relief as well as eradication of poverty, disease and illiteracy.
The discount coupon books will soon be available at select retail outlets in Larchmont; for the present, they can be ordered by contacting either John Keenan, firstname.lastname@example.org,

SAT or ACT? Which is the right
test for you?
The process of choosing your preferred college or university and then applying to them has become almost as daunting as studying at the college/university level. Add the confusion over which entrance exam to take and you can easily find yourself in one of the most stressful and challenging situations there is for someone who’s just about to complete high school. Just what is the truth about college entrance exams? Do colleges and universities show a preference for one test over the other? If so, how do you find out which they prefer? Do you have to report all of your SAT scores? What’s the difference in the layout of the two tests? Can you take both tests and if so, how do you schedule them?
To help college-bound students, The Larchmont Public Library is offering no less than three opportunities for prospective college students to hone their exam skills by investing a small amount of time taking practice exams and getting answers to their questions about those tests. Each session is free but the end result is that you will have a much greater chance at improved test scores which increases your chance of being accepted by the college or university of your choice.
At the Larchmont Public Library, beginning on Saturday morning, Jan. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Independent Counselors from Applerouth Tutoring Services, will be on hand to guide students through taking a practice SAT exam. The Applerouth Counselors will be on hand again on the morning of Jan. 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to guide students through taking a practice ACT exam. Students electing to take both practice exams can get help from the counselors to compare the two scores. Students will also receive a detailed score report that highlights personal strength and weaknesses. Both practice exams require students to register online with Applerouth Tutoring Services at www.applerouth.com/signup. For the SAT practice exam, students will need to use code M113545, and for the ACT exam the registration code is M113546. More information about Applerouth is also available on their website.
If you’re undecided about which test to take, Theresa Michna, a local educator who has coached hundreds of students on the SAT and ACT exams, will discuss the exams in detail on Thursday evening, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. Michna will address your questions and provide advice on which is the best exam for you to take. This session will take place in the Larchmont Village Center located directly behind the Larchmont Public Library.
Shop for fresh produce all winter long
Westchester residents will be able to buy farm-fresh local produce, cheeses and other dairy products, meats, baked goods and wine directly from farmers and producers at the indoor farmers market to be held on the last Sunday of each month from November through March, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.
Dates are Sundays, Jan. 26, Feb. 23 and March 30, 2014. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This year’s market will consist of a variety of vendors who are farmers and food producers, all from the tri-state area. And, to tempt shoppers and to help them make selections, vendors will offer samples of their foods.
To add to the fun, each month will feature live entertainment provided by local musicians from the Hudson Valley and surrounding area.
Admission is free. Parking at the County Center lot is $5.
The farmers market is sponsored by Westchester County Parks and Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc.
