Students provided new backpacks for school

Students Jason Smith, Justin Smith and Elijah Jones show off their new backpacks, which were donated by local businesses and individuals in time for the start of school.

Children at the Tuckahoe Housing Authority got a leg up on the school year Aug. 29 after a few dedicated residents collected backpacks and other school supplies and gave them out at the authority’s senior center.

Spearheaded by Hazel Alexander-Campbell and Mary Alexander, both of Tuckahoe, the event was well-attended. All of the backpacks and school supplies were given away in time for the start of classes, which began Sept. 9 in the Tuckahoe Union Free School District.

The school supplies were donated by local businesses and individuals.

Many of the children donned their new backpacks, smiling from ear-to-ear. All told, more than 50 backpacks were given away.

The average family of an elementary school student spends close to $600 for back-to-school supplies and extracurricular activities, according to the Huntington Bank’s 2013 Backpack Index.
