Letter: Larchmont likes Latimer

To the Editor,

In last week’s edition, the Republicans announced an opponent for George Latimer for the state Senate. I have known George for a long time, as have many of our Larchmont and Mamaroneck friends, and he has been a tremendous and effective advocate for all of us.

Thus, I was a bit shocked to hear his opponent, who has just entered the race and has no record of community involvement at all, say it’s time “to send [George] home.”

Quite the opposite; it is time to appreciate that George has been working for us on issue after issue for a long time and it’s time to send a message to those who run to advance a partisan or ideological interest that we don’t want more partisanship in Albany. We want the kind of down-to-earth representation that George Latimer has brought to our village and town. He is open and accessible; he is engaged in issues large and small; he has delivered both legislation and money for worthwhile community purposes. Over and over and over again.

In the Village of Larchmont and the Town of Mamaroneck, we do not have competitive races for U.S. Congress, state Assembly or Town Council this year; the race for state Senate is the only race on the ballot with both parties competing, and competition is good for our democracy. But among all of who serve us well, George Latimer has proven he merits the endorsement of our communities.

I can’t speak for other areas, but the Larchmont and Mamaroneck communities should give a ringing endorsement to George Latimer, and send him back to Albany as our state senator.
