By placing against some of the best runners in the northeast, Ryan Bird has earned this week’s Athlete of the Week award. At the Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, Ryan placed 28th out of more than 200 top runners, completing the 2.5 mile course through the woods and over the hills in an outstanding 13:48. He followed that performance with a personal best of 16:39 in the Brewster Invitational 5K, where he placed 5th among runners from all over the area, and then a 2nd place finish in the league championships. Bird has finished in the top five in five of his six races.
The Garnet team won all three dual meets this year and placed second in the league. Ryan and the rest of the team are looking forward to the next few weeks, including the county and sectional championships. Ryan, a junior, hopes to qualify for the state championships this year.
“Ryan has been the consummate leader for the Cross Country Team,” coach Joe Brown said. “Ryan leads by example. He’s always the first at practice and the last to leave and was involved in the summer practices. He is always willing to help.”
Training hard throughout the year, Ryan will be looking to earn his seventh varsity letter this season. When the cross country season ends, Ryan will continue to run the rest of the year in indoor and outdoor track.
