Running as graceful and as fast as a gazelle, setting records in the process, Maggie McDermott has been named the latest Athlete of the Week.
Maggie, a junior on Rye’s track team, is one of the fastest runners for the Garnets in the longer distance events. Her top times this year have been 3:12 in the 1000m, 4:56 in the 1500m, 5:33 in the 1600m and 10:52 in the 3000m. Her 1500m time has earned her All League in her first year competing in Winter Track. Her 3000m set the Garnets winter track record for juniors.
As a sophomore in her first season of spring track, Maggie broke the school records for the 1600m and the 3000m for a sophomore and made it to the state qualifying race. She was also was a member of two relay teams that broke freshman and sophomore records, a sprint medley relay and a distance medley relay.
Being a distance runner takes a lot of hard work and dedication and Maggie continues to push herself and her teammates.
Charlotte O’Connell, one of the other members of the record-breaking medley team along with Anjali Logue and Sarah Breckenridge, said. “Maggie’s upbeat personality and determination is shown both on and off the track and field. I couldn’t be a prouder teammate and friend.”
Coach John McGee concurs.
“Maggie works exceptionally hard every day” he said. “She has goals and is willing to work hard to achieve them.”
Maggie is a member of the high honor roll. When not running or studying, Maggie also competes for the soccer team and also participates on the Rye Liberty team in
