Senior co-captain Maddie Murcko has passed and volleyed her way to this week’s Athlete of the Week, helping her team reach the sectional tournament.
Maddie has been a key player on and off the court for the Garnets volleyball team. In a match against Valhalla on Oct. 26, Murcko played a key role and led the Garnets to victory with 17 assists.
“[Maddie is] a determined, hard-working and dedicated athlete,” head coach Melanie Flowers said. “She gives her all to her team, supports them to the very end and has been a model captain.”
Maddie is the team’s main setter and key in keeping the Garnets offense rolling.
“As much as Maddie may not believe she helps the team in succeeding, she really keeps us together as a whole,” teammate Samanth Viger said. “She’s always the one to tell us to get over the bad plays and focus on the next point. Her spirit and energy on the court make us all want to play our hardest.”
Murcko has also competed in softball and track at the high school. She plays volleyball year round for various club teams. After this current season, she plans on playing for the U-18 team for Chelsea Piers.
Maddie, is currently looking at various colleges from all across the country for next year, but has not made a final decision yet. Wherever she goes, she hopes to become a zoologist with the goal of helping orphan elephants and cheetahs.
