With an outstanding performance at the Greenwich Invitational, the Rye High School Boys Four crew team made up of seniors Grant Janart and Brendan Faries and juniors Jim Palmer, Kiefer Mueller and coxswain Ally Sullivan have been named this week’s Athletes of the Week.
“The skills they have [used] to be able to succeed again and again shows what hard work and commitment can get you,” teammate Erin Fallon said. “They are great role models for the younger kids on the team.”
Held at a 1,200-meter course in Greenwich Harbor, the Greenwich Invitational featured roughly 800 athletes from both the tri-state and New England areas. The Boys Four are teams consisting of four crew members and a coxswain. There were five qualifying heats in the Boys Four, with only the top two teams advancing to the finals.
The Rye squad placed second overall, just two seconds behind Norwalk and seven seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.
Rye got the opportunity to challenge Norwalk in the finals, where they posted a time of 2:38.38, two seconds ahead of Norwalk.
“The crew is working hard to be the state champions in the Men’s Coxed Four for the
second year in a row,” coach Jennifer Palermo, who runs the team along with Stan Nelson, said. “They will compete at the New York State Championship on the weekend of May 9. The state championship is a qualifying regatta for both Scholastic Nationals in West Windsor, N.J. and U.S. Youth Rowing Nationals in Sacramento, California.”
